Behind the Cover

There is so much in a cover; it draws you in with all its mystery and excitement. Even with its simplicity, it begs you to take a closer look, peel the corner, and peek into the pages beneath. Much like a headliner plastered across the front page of a newspaper, you get a taste of what lies in the work. So much time, effort, and love goes into the final product and is then narrowed down by a single-word title - in this case: Couvert.

Volume IX of Être has come to be because of the many people that put in all the hard work to make it better than it has been in years past. It only took 2 semesters, 21 members, 68 pages, and an extraordinary amount of outside help to put together an iconic piece of work. To shine a light on the creators behind the cover take a look inside the minds of the authors of Être’s Volume IX, Couvert, and celebrate their passions with them.

Suni Crane, Editor and Chief

Overviewed all content as it was being made and reviewed all of the parts of the magazine before it was published.

“I love being able to bring together such a talented group of individuals and lead our team toward our goals. Bringing our team’s visions to life is the best job anyone could ask for.”

Kelsey Cour, Creative Director

Created the general concept for the magazine, approved all photoshoot ideas, and organized models for each photoshoot.

“I think this magazine was Être’s best work! I think it gets better each year as people learn and leadership becomes more comfortable and confident with the team pushing boundaries. This magazine is starting to feel and appear less like a college project and more like a professional piece of work, which makes me really proud and excited.”

Jill Horner, Art Director

Oversaw the graphic creation of the magazine design and layouts, worked with other teams to gather layout contents, created spreads and graphics, and prepared the final version of the magazine to be printed.

“The most rewarding part of Être is being able to work with talented, creative people in an uplifting atmosphere. Being able to see all of our hard work, through the digital creation of the magazine to the final printed copy, is the most amazing experience.”

Savannah Falcone, Content Editor

Edited the writing pieces throughout the magazine and wrote the main cover piece in the published copy.

“There is a lot of hard work that goes into creating the magazine, and everyone plays such a valuable role. Seeing everyone’s ideas come together to create such a cohesive piece is very impressive to me and something I am very proud of.”

Summer Hill, Fashion Editor

Styled the photoshoots for both “Open Air” and “Disco Daze” in the magazine. Oversaw the remaining stylists in their photoshoots as well.

“My favorite part of the magazine this year was working with each of the stylists to bring their idea to life. They’re each so creative and had so many amazing ideas that I did everything I could to help them create it. Each stylist worked so hard and I loved seeing how it paid off.”

Marianna Robbins, Social Media Director

Created a cohesive, interactive, and exciting Instagram through creating Instagram videos and reels, organized mini-photo shoots for media content, and set up a giveaway to gain a larger audience in anticipation of the Volume IX release.

“Although the social media team’s work doesn’t get displayed in the magazine, it’s gratifying to be able to be the liaison between the Être team and our readers during the large span of time that the magazine isn’t released yet. Getting people excited for the upcoming issues has been so fun!”

Alexa Ward, Social Media Director

Created a cohesive, interactive, and exciting Instagram through creating Instagram videos and reels, organized mini-photo shoots for media content, and set up a giveaway to gain a larger audience in anticipation of the Volume IX release.

“I have been on the Être team since my freshman year at Mississippi State University, and it has truly been one of the most rewarding organizations. This year’s magazine has been the best one yet, and I am so thankful I had the opportunity to serve as Co-Director of Social Media beside Marianna my senior year. From getting closer with the amazing staff or following along behind the scenes of shoots, it has been an amazing experience to watch this year’s magazine bring to life the creativity of each individual member. I am so excited for the future of Être, and I am so thankful I got to be a part of Couvert!”

Heidi Boot, Content Creator

Wrote the encapsulation piece at the very beginning of the magazine and the articles for “Mirror Mirror”, “Open Air”, “Party of One”, and “Blood Money”.

“Être Vol. IX has so much heart and creativity put into it by every single member of the team. It’s awesome to see the end result, as well as how my contributions helped with it.”

Payton Brown, Content Creator

Wrote the articles for “Pretty n Pieces”, “Featured”, “Crown”, and “On the Green”.

“It was truly rewarding to see all of our hard work pay off when the magazine was finished and printed. Having a hard copy of something we have all been working on for the past year was very satisfying and really validated the experience itself.”

Sadie Ogletree, Content Creator

Wrote the articles for “Disco Daze” and “In Touch”.

“Being on the writing team has always been such a great creative challenge for me because I want my work to match the vibes of the shoots, but sometimes you just have to go off of what you’ve been given and write a piece on it! That creative challenge is so rewarding to see when the magazine comes out and everything matches together so well.”

Hannah Smith, Stylist

Styled the ”On the Green” and “Pretty n Pieces” photoshoots.

“There are so many different sides to the magazine, and it all seems like chaos when they’re separate. However, when it all comes together and settles into place, the magazine turns into something that exceeds everything you expected. It makes you feel extremely important to see how much of a difference your piece makes in the grand scheme of things.”

Carson Miller, Stylist

Styled the “Featured” and “In Touch” photoshoots and modeled in the “Pretty n’ Pieces” photoshoot.

I loved working with new and different people to create and achieve my vision as a stylist. It’s so rewarding getting to see your ideas come to life.”

Claire Allen, Stylist

Styled the “Mirror, Mirror” photoshoot.

“Planning out the shoots takes so much work, but once it is actually taking place you get so excited. Seeing the model in the clothes you styled, the hair and makeup being done, and the photographer taking the shoot into their hands and creating something so beautiful is so rewarding.”

Katey Kemp, Stylist

Styled the “Party of One” photoshoot and co-styled the “Blood Money” photoshoot.

“Before joining Être, I had no idea what all went into creating this magazine. Being on Être, I am so appreciative to everyone who puts so much time and effort into this magazine to make it a great one. Also, seeing the final project was such an awesome experience for me to see my actual work in a magazine.”

Meg Karner, Stylist

Styled the “Crown” photoshoot and co-styled the “Blood Money” photoshoot.

The team really supports and helps your ideas come to life and it is so rewarding to see it all come together. I also love to see what others create and how they choose their theme. I also loved just being at a shoot and being in my element experimenting with poses, hair, makeup, and outfits.”

Michelle Daschbach, Creative Team

Photographed 5 shoots (“Mirror Mirror”, “Touch”, “Pretty n Pieces”, “Crown”, and “Party of One”) for the magazine this year and made the magazine layouts.

“I love getting to work with the stylists to capture their visions and create really cool photographs. I also love that I get to combine both my loves of photography and graphic design into creating the magazine.”

Susannah Case, Creative Team

Created the spreads for “Featured”, “On the Green”, “Open Air”, and ”In Touch”.

“My favorite part was taking everyone’s work and putting it together to mesh all of the different parts of the team’s ideas and creations and adding a little bit of my own through the design of it all.”
