Get Up, It’s Fashion Week... I Mean, Gameday!

When one thinks of national holidays, the obvious answers like Christmas, Thanksgiving, the 4th of July, and so many others come to mind. What some people fail to recognize is that fans of college football add at least twelve unofficial national holidays to their fall calendars every year, and those are gamedays. Almost every Saturday of the fall season is reserved for Americans all over the country to put on their team’s colors and gather with friends and families to watch the big games. Each region in the country has their own traditions for gameday, covering everything from tailgating to what to wear.

In the South-Eastern states, gameday Is not for the weak, especially when it comes to gameday fashion. College girls in the South take great pride in their appearance on gameday. Many will spend large amounts of money at local boutiques or online stores buying new clothing items for each game. These clothes can fall under any category, being as fancy as cocktail dresses in some cases. A couple of popular themes seen at an SEC gameday are mini dresses, boots/booties, bodysuits, skirts, metallics, faux leathers, sparkles and sequins, bubble sleeves, ruffles, large framed sunglasses, gold jewelry, gameday pins, spray tans, and of course, perfect makeup and hair.

To put it into perspective for those who may not be familiar with the intensity of this gameday fit, with one quick shoe change and the removal of the gameday pins, these outfits could be worn straight from the game to a cocktail party or semi-formal event. Many of these girls will spend weeks in advance planning their outfits for each game, and the hard work and dedication to having the perfect insta-worthy outfit does not go unnoticed.

On the other hand, schools in other parts of the country tend to have a more laid back gameday dress code. Girls who attend these schools are prone to lean more into donning their school spirit. Unlike in the South where it’s highly unlikely their school's logo will be seen anywhere in their outfit, non-SEC students typically wear t-shirts/jerseys that are on theme with their schools, and usually pair it with classic denim and sneakers.

These outfits will vary based on region and school traditions. For example, most Texas schools will wear this outfit but add a cowboy hat or pair of boots, but they all tend to fit the same mold. Much like when it comes to the football teams themselves, the South is carrying the rest of the country when it comes to the significance of the gameday fit. Whether it’s your cup of tea or not, one has to appreciate the dedication.
