Building a sustainable and timeless wardrobe can be challenging in an industry that’s filled with fast fashion trends. However, if we tune out these distractions and become more conscious of our style and needs, we can curate our wardrobe to be filled with beautiful, classic pieces.
Through personal experience, I would like to share three steps that have assisted me on my journey of building a capsule wardrobe.
1 Organize your wardrobe and part with items you no longer need

Before building your wardrobe, it is essential to organize the existing pieces that are already in your closet. This will help you get a better understanding of which clothing items you need and which clothing items need to be given away, donated, or sold. A way to do this sustainably would be upcycling old garments into new garments or accessories. You can organize by laying all of your clothes out to get a better look at them. By determining which items you still love and wear frequently, you will discover which items you can part with.
2 Find your personal style

Being unsure of your personal style often leads to following current trends that contribute to overconsumption and waste. The goal is to be able to wear clothing items for years without feeling like it’s a trend that isn’t in style. While finding your style, it’s important to consider your body type. Understanding your body type helps determine which silhouettes and cuts will help you feel the most confidence. An easy way to do this is to find celebrities or models with similar body types to you and focusing on pieces that suit them best.
3 Build the basics

Basics are the supporting pieces in your wardrobe that work with everything. They provide you with multiple different outfit combinations and pair well with the unique, stand-out pieces that give your wardrobe personal and effortless style. Trying to build an outfit without your closet basics is nearly impossible. Oftentimes, it’s why people look in their closets and say they have nothing to wear. These items are money well spent in your wardrobe, so it’s important to make sure these are quality pieces!
